Today is the 1st September, which marks the start of Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event that is the prime opportunity for us to spread awareness of the effects and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.
The below dates and events are listed here for ease, so that we have all the relevant events to hand, in which we can raise awareness of thyroid disease and various related topics.
(National) Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month
– Is always held in March. It’s often referred to as ‘National Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month’, focusing on the US, but I believe we should make it an international event, so I refer to it as simply Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month.
International Thyroid Awareness Week
– It was from the 23rd May – 29th May in 2016
and should be similar dates in future years.
World Thyroid Day is always on the 25th May
Thyroid cancer awareness month
– Is always held in September
Invisible Illness Awareness Week
– It was from the 26th September – 2nd October in 2016
and should be similar in future years.
Thyroid UK‘s Thyroid Awareness Week.
– The charity Thyroid UK celebrate Thyroid Awareness Week in October
– It was from the 15th-21st October in 2016 and should be similar dates in future years.

Surgery performed on the thyroid gland is known as a thyroidectomy. This usually involves removing all (a total thyroidectomy) or part (half – a Subtotal/Partial Thyroidectomy or quarter – Thyroid Lobectomy) of the thyroid. A thyroidectomy may be performed as treatment for thyroid cancer, when a goitre or nodule is causing problems or as a form of treatment for hyperthyroidism (it could be after trying radioactive iodine therapy and/or antithyroid drugs, with no success).

While many people survive thyroid cancer, it can be a complicated cancer to diagnose and treat. I’ve covered some information on symptoms, testing and types, below.
Have you ever noticed your neck seems enlarged or been told it ‘sticks out’? Does it feel uncomfortable to swallow? Do you struggle to swallow or feel a lump in your throat? You could have an enlarged thyroid gland, also called a goitre. It can be slight or very noticeable.
There could be many reasons for this, so I’ve summed some of the most common reasons up below.
